Basic Concepts in Drug Addiction 4 The definition of drug and addictive behavior is related to other basic terms. The first involves distinguishing between the use and abuse of a substance. We understand drug use to be drug consumption that does not negatively impact health. Drug consumption becomes abusive at the appearance of dependence. Drug addiction can be conceptualized as a disturbance of behavior motivated by drug-conditioned incentives. This abnormality has been explained by Incentive-Sensitization and Allostatic-Counteradaptive theories as the result of non-associative mechanisms acting at the stage of the expression of incentive motivation and responding for drug reinforcement.

There are lots of people whose drug use is bad for them, in ways that they mostly know. The problem is that the reward of using is now and the cost of using is later. I don’t regard drug use as mysterious in the way that some people do. I don’t think there is some fundamental disorder about using drugs. The book reviews the biochemical and physiological abnormalities in each of the body?s organ systems and helps the investigator decide if the problem is of drug-induced origin. Most of the information is presented as a series of observations with accompanying questions which should be addressed in order to make an accurate s: 1.

the depressed of "flat" feeling that drug users may feel when they are not taking a drug is related to reduced production of the brain's natural chemical regulators drug use over a long period of time typically leads to what condition in the body. Substance Use. Alcohol use was assessed by the AUDIT, which was also administered to the parents. Of the adolescents in the study (34 of their parents) scored 0 on the AUDIT and thus had never used alcohol whereas adolescents (and parents) reported the use of alcohol (score >0).
